Wisdom Teeth Removal

No one wants to hear that they need to have one, let alone four, teeth removed, but wisdom teeth removal is a common dental procedure aimed at eliminating several dental issues, preserving your other teeth and keeping your gums healthy.

Fortunately, Dr Vawda, Dr Gourlay and the rest of the Willow Dental Care team can effectively remove your wisdom teeth, and if you’re feeling anxious or scared about the procedure, we understand! That’s why we offer nitrous oxide to keep you calm and comfortable, allowing you to receive the care you deserve without worry.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to erupt at the very back of your mouth. Historically, humans needed these extra molars to chew tough, raw foods such as roots and meat, but that’s no longer the case.

Most adults get their wisdom teeth between 17 and 25 years old. For some, wisdom teeth don’t cause any concerns, but for many people, there simply isn’t enough space to accommodate four extra teeth. This often leads to crowding issues or impaction, where your teeth get trapped under your gums and jawbone.

The Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal: What You Should Know

You may not think that tooth extraction is ever a good thing, but the truth is that sometimes removing your wisdom teeth can actually improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Prevents Damage and Crowding
Removing your wisdom teeth often eliminates pressure on your neighbouring teeth, and this could eliminate the need for clear aligners or traditional braces. Wisdom tooth extraction can also decrease the need for other dental treatments.
Stops Decay and Gum Disease
Because your wisdom teeth are located at the very back of your mouth, they can be difficult to clean, leading to tooth decay or periodontal disease. Removing your wisdom teeth keeps food debris from collecting in these areas.
Eliminates Pain and Impaction
When your wisdom teeth get trapped beneath your gum line, it can lead to several uncomfortable issues, including headaches, jaw stiffness and in the worst cases, severe facial pain that doesn’t subside, even when you take medication.

  • Numbness of your lip or palate may persist for several hours after the procedure.

  • Avoid rinsing or spitting as this may dislodge the clot
  • Avoid heavy physical exertion for 24 hours
  • If slightly heavier bleeding occurs:
  • Place a piece of gauze over the extraction site

  • Rest quietly with your head elevated

The Step-by-Step Procedure

During your consultation, we’ll explain the extraction process, answer your questions and ease your mind about this straightforward treatment.

Here’s what will happen on the day of your procedure:

  1. First, we’ll completely numb your mouth so you won’t feel anything. And if you choose nitrous oxide, we’ll administer it before we begin.
  2. If one or more of your wisdom teeth are impacted, we’ll need to make a small incision in your gums to expose your tooth.
  3. We’ll remove any bone that keeps us from accessing your tooth’s roots.
  4. If necessary, we’ll cut your tooth into sections to make removal easier.
  5. Using special dental tools, we’ll gently loosen and remove each part of your tooth.
  6. We’ll clean and disinfect the empty socket to prevent infection before repositioning your gum tissue and stitching the area.
  7. You’ll bite down on gauze to control the bleeding and encourage blood clot formation.
